In order to address this question I first want to establish what I understand the term “the media” to mean. I did a quick Google Search and this is the first definition I found, and it pretty much encompasses what I have meant when I refer to “the media”.
“the main means of mass communication (broadcasting, publishing, and the Internet), regarded collectively”.
To my knowledge this question was first raised after a tweet by President Trump back in February.
As you can imagine this tweet caused quite a stir. Many on the Left were calling this an attack on the First Amendment.
“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances”
Our Founding Fathers understood the importance of a free and independent press. Here is the thing though, many forget about the “independent” part, which is crucial. In Jefferson’s own words…
“I think an editor should be independent, that is, of personal influence, and not be moved from his opinions on the mere authority of any individual. But, with respect to the general opinion of the political section with which he habitually accords, his duty seems very like that of a member of Congress. Some of these indeed think that independence requires them to follow always their own opinion, without respect for that of others. This has never been my opinion, nor my practice, when I have been of that or any other body. Differing on a particular question from those whom I knew to be of the same political principles with myself, and with whom I generally thought and acted, a consciousness of the fallibility of the human mind, and of my own in particular, with a respect for the accumulated judgment of my friends, has induced me to suspect erroneous impressions in myself, to suppose my own opinion wrong, and to act with them on theirs.” –Thomas Jefferson to William Duane, 1811.
If you take away the word “independent” you no longer have the free exchange of ideas, opinions, and information, but rather the potential for propaganda. This is why the answer to the initial question is not as simple as it sounds.
There are over 300 million people in the United States today. There were a couple of dozen Presidential candidates alone. I doubt many of us knew any of the candidates personally, so we rely on the media, and more specifically the press, to vet the candidates, and to do so without bias. Then we rely on the media to keep us up to date on what is going on in Washington. Having the media provide us that information honestly and objectively is vital. The news is vital, and our trust in those providing the news may be the most vital of all.
Now, we all understand that journalists, newscasters, talk show hosts, are all people. They all have their opinions, and I am sure they all believe their opinions are the right ones. Our democracy just will not work if we can’t get honest, unbiased, news.
To answer the question, in my opinion, yes, the media has become an enemy of the American people. I have described how important I feel it is for us to receive honest, unbiased news, from a free and independent media. Here is some of the evidence that leads me to believe that the media is purposely pushing their own agenda.
Donna Brazile who at the time was both a CNN contributor and the interim DNC Chair, admitted to passing town hall questions to members of Hillary Clinton’s campaign, giving Hillary time to prepare for the questions. This was done to help Hillary defeat Bernie Sanders in the Primary. The same type of behavior that led to the resignation of Brazile’s predecessor Debbie Wasserman Schultz.
Here is a clip of a CNN town hall debate in which the CNN moderator debates Trump herself
Don Lemon refuses to report on the Susan Rice story, saying it was fake. This turned out to be a real story.
The media decided before the election that Donald Trump should not be President and they did all they could to assist Hillary to make sure Trump did not win. What is worse, after the people elected Donald Trump, the media decided that he still should not be President, so they work against him everyday. They call him a liar, they suggest he is a racist, Stephen Colbert, late night talk show host came out and made these disgusting comments about the current President of the United States. A man elected by the American People.
In my opinion, the evidence is pretty clear. The media has decided, the American People should no longer have the right to choose their President, so the media will push a narrative that they hope will put the person they choose into office.
Yes, “the media” has become an enemy of the American People. They have lost our trust and disgraced themselves. They should be ashamed.
